Jesus was in Bethany, at Simon’s house (Simon who had once had leprosy). He was eating a meal when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume. She broke the jar open, and poured the perfume all over Jesus’ head. Some of the other guests got very angry at this. ‘Why waste perfume like that?’ they asked, ‘you could have sold it for hundred of pounds, and given the money to poor people!’ They began to be very cruel to the woman.

‘Leave her alone!’ Jesus said. ‘Why are you upsetting her? What she did for me was beautiful! … You can be sure that wherever people tell others about the good news what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.’ (Mark’s gospel, chapter 14)

Alabaster Jar is a website set up to remember and celebrate other women who have done something beautiful for Jesus, particularly women who have led the church and preached.
