The background image is a version, slightly recoloured and cropped, of Artemisia Gentileschi’s Esther before Ahasuerus. Gentileschi was the first female painter to become a member of the Florentine Academy of the Arts. She specialised in illustrating stories of strong Biblical women, most famously in her image of Judith beheading Holofernes.
A painting of a Biblical scene is an interpretation of the Bible and, if done well, can teach; Gentileschi’s paintings teach of the strong female leaders found in Scripture. Choosing one of them seemed an appropriate background for this website.
